VIRUNGA Democratic Republic of Congo

In this design, a male Mountain Gorilla – the leader of his family troop – thumps his chest on the forested slopes of Mount Karisimbi. The active volcanoes of Nyiragongo and Nyamuragira can be seen in the background, echoing the viewpoint of magnificent diorama conceived in the 1920’s by taxidermist-sculptor-conservationist Carl Akeley at the American Museum of Natural History. African Rosewood (Hagenia) trees arch over the scene, with the chief gorilla food plants of Wild Celery and Virunga Blackberries also depicted. An endemic Archer’s Robinchat perches in the mossy foreground.
