Whistling Ducks

White-faced Whistling-Duck (Dendrocygna viduata)

The White-faced Whistling-Duck is fairly common over all of sub-Saharan Africa, absent only from the dry Karoo-Kalahari and the wet Congo Basin. Curiously, it also occurs in South America (as does its close relative the Fulvous Whistling-Duck) and – along with the Comb Duck – are the only waterfowl to occur on both sides of the Atlantic.

The whistling-ducks are more closely related to swans and geese than they are to other ducks and are named for their distinctive whistled calls used to maintain contact among flock members.
